Most of these images were taken while I was on the road in Uttarakhand, updating the Lonely Planet guidebook to India amid some of the worst monsoon storms in anyone's memory. Rivers flooded, roads were destroyed by landslides, villages were swept away. I waited out the rains in the lowlands, then headed for the mountains as soon as the skies (and roads) were clear. The timing proved perfect, putting me in Valley of Flowers National Park on my birthday.

The last bunch of photos was taken in the forest camp of my Van Gujjar friends (see Van Gujjar Migration gallery) in the Shivalik Hills, in northern Uttar Pradesh. Seeing them again after 16 months was like visiting family, in the best of ways.
